im too tired to write out something thoughtful, but the idea that if i use one too many good commas or, god forbid, an em dash makes my writing automatically invalid is possibly the frustrating thing ever

I agree entirely, when I started this page I decided I wouldn't let myself dilute my voice.

It’s frustrating how something as small as a punctuation mark can make people question whether a human even wrote it.

Sadly, it's become such a common accusation! It pains me to know that people feel as if they have to "dumb" their work down to not be accused of AI.

First off, I have read your other writing and it’s very far from being AI generated — in fact, it’s very human and humane and personal in content and style, something you can be proud of. So I think you can safely ignore accusations from random people. But the AI or AI accusation issue points to a bigger problem. Your article triggered a lot of reflection on my part.

Reflections on bigger issues around the use of AI than simply writing with its help. I’ve tried to articulate some of these in a post of my own. But thank you for your article calling attention to some of the issues.

this is also a huge problem for ppl who are neurodivergent!! every time i turn something in to my professors i PURPOSELY misplace a comma or two because i have been falsely accused multiple times!!!

It hadn't crossed my mind!! It must be so frustrating having to “prove” your own work like that. Especially for neurodivergent students who already face enough challenges navigating school systems.

I'm amazed at the fact you've been criticised in this way and I have missed your writing. I noticed yesterday that you hadn't published anything since May. I find your writing gets right to the very centre of what it is to be human and I value it immensely. Thank you 😊 Karen

Thank you so much for saying this, it means the world! Yes, I took a little break from my page due to personal conflicts but I'm back and better than ever.

I love that you’ve addressed this! I recently came across one of those “how to tell if it’s AI” articles and the “identifiers” were simply unbelievable. One of them was a lack of typos. So if the article doesn’t have any typos, it’s AI… seriously? Unbelievable.

We rely so much on computers to do things we've forgotten what humans can do without them!

I'm getting ready to publish a book based on my OWN storyline.

Can't wait for the-Artificial to train itself on MY life, then turnaround and imitate me immediately in someone's chat box, then double back against to tell me that "my entire life was a lie ... artificial experience".

so sorry you and we are experiencing this craziness ... but that's exactly what TechNOlogic living does ... it reduces ALL to the-Artificial and drives every Being to insanity.

Yes! Some of my favorite authors have been affected by those pages like "Character AI" imitating their work with no compensation whatsoever! It sucks we've reached this point.

First, I love your writing. And the thought you put behind it. Thank you for that.

Second, I have chosen to move forward by thinking that the only reason people would comment hurtful things like "that was written by AI" is that they couldn't write anything remotely as well-written themselves. Thus, it must be done by AI.

However you move forward I hope you know that I find such comfort from reading what you write, and I appreciate you immensely.

Thank you for your comment, you don't know how much it means. I agree, I've decided to stop letting random opinions dilute my work! I know what I can do and that why I'll keep writing.

We did not study English, read hours of all dictionary volumes and write essays till the writer callous on our fingers swelled to have our work labeled as “AI written”. This makes me so angry. Especially as someone whose second language is English. I’m sorry but I worked too damn hard on mastering this craft to be reduced to some dumb imitation of intelligence. Articulating ones thoughts isn’t magic or impossible it literally requires dedication, double checking and practice. This makes my blood boil. Thank you for writing so beautifully and sharing your thoughts 🤍🤍🤍

Sigh. We are living in very low standards times. I wrote for a living for decades and never had anyone suggest my work was plagiarized or created by AI. Analytical writing is becoming a thing of the past replaced by summary writing (google writing). Lazy minds have no problem with that.

Wow I had no idea this was a thing. I’ve been off media for a few months and on my return I feel the flavour of Substack has altered slightly, with more snippiness. I came here to get away from that, and have loved the beautiful writing I’ve found on Substack. Your letter on eldest daughters is one of the best (written, organized, punctuated, etc) posts I’ve read here. It was so helpful and so needed on the day I read it. Thank you for writing it. Thank you for being here. Don’t let the haters shut you up please. I appreciate you 🙏🏽

I guess, it is no longer the truth that matters but the tone in which it is told.

This reminds me of the time my sister wrote a report for her English class and the teacher said it was so perfect it had to be AI. I was so annoyed and I felt offended that her hard work was so good that the teacher couldn’t possibly believe it was her. My sis felt like she had to “dumb down” her work in order to be taken seriously, which is ridiculous. I totally understand your sentiment!!
